India 16 Thailand 0
The huge difference between the top four teams and the lower ranked sides was
yet again starkly highlighted in the seventh match of the 6th Asia Cup Women’s
Hockey Championships when India rammed in 16 goals against Thailand’s 0 in
today’s, 3rd September, opening pool A fixture at Kings Park, Hong Kong.
India’s 16-0 victory was another tournament goal scoring record, bettering
China’s 15-0 scored yesterday against Singapore.
Today India showed impressive stick work against the outclassed Thai squad who
to their credit never stopped trying with several runs at the Indian goal in the
closing minutes of the game with Ompimol Kititeerasopon and Pannipha Phanin
prominent.
Rather than using raw power play in all their shots at goal, the Indian players
showed deft touches both in open play and in taking penalty corners.
Several Indian goals also came from very well taken reverse stick flicks and
hits.
Both Surinder Kaur’s and Rani Ritu’s reverse stick prowess was displayed with
beautifully taken goals in the 52nd and 55th minutes of the match to take the
score to 11-0.
Similarly India’s four converted penalty corners did not come from powerful hits
but rather very clever passing inside the Thai circle.
India cruised to a 5-0 lead at the interval and then moved up a notch in the
second half to really show their class and score another 11goals.
Result: India 16 (goal scorers: Surinder Kaur x 5; Mamta Kharab x 3; Rani Ritu x
2; Jasjeet Kaur x 2; Saba Anjum x 2; Suman Bala; Rajwinder Kaur ) : Thailand 0
